The business idea behind SmartCare originated from Lyn Cecil's personal experience following the birth of her son Mark. The stress, strain and mental anguish she experienced during this time of raising a special needs child brought Lyn’s caring instincts to the fore. Lyn initially took up a part-time nursing position in a nursing home at weekends. In October 1997 she gave up her full-time position as an Executive Secretary and became a full-time carer, overseeing the rehabilitation and well-being of a stroke victim and a quadriplegic.
As time went on, Lyn realised from her first hand experience that the plight of the disabled had not changed since she raised her own special needs child so many years ago. Lyn noticed that this was particularly so when people wanted to meet an appointment or attend a social function. This led Lyn to start her own business and in July 1998 she started Bangor Caring Service providing wheelchair accessible transport for people who needed to attend to many of the activities most people take for granted. Today the company has a new name, SmartCare.
SmartCare is a specialised non emergency community service with an operator having a minimum qualification of Certificate III Assistant in Nursing or Aged Care, offering the best possible transitional and associated personal care to assist the frail aged and wheelchair bound experience the mobility as enjoyed by others.
Specialising in servicing the specific requirements of clients, SmartCare has developed an enviable reputation due to its high standard of care and very reasonable fees. The service provides trained staff offering transitional and associated personal assistance by accompanying the client to medical/specialist appointments, hospital pre-admissions/admissions/discharges, social functions such as weddings, reunions, various social outings and funerals.
For those clients unable to sit upright in a wheelchair, our vehicles can accommodate water/tub chairs, secured firmly to the floor in the same fashion as a wheelchair thus giving the client additional support.
With the baby boomers coming of age – retiring age that is – sadly many will suffer debilitating illnesses while others spend their twilight years in residential care, SmartCare will be invaluable in enabling these folk to experience the mobility enjoyed by others in the community.
While SmartCare services hospitals, hostels and private homes, the service was initially created with nursing homes in mind, hence the requirement that an operator have a minimum qualification of Certificate III Assistant in Nursing or Aged Care.
The business has continued to grow and evolved into its new name, SmartCare and can proudly boast STATE FINALIST 2008 New South Wales & ACT Small Business CHAMPION Awards Professional Services
