In the brief interludes of news between Olympics footage you may have observed Fuel-Watch falling at the final hurdle in the Senate.
With two of the biggest personalities in the upper house voicing their reservations over Fuel-Watch the Government could be in trouble - both Nick Xenophon and Steve Fielding seem intent on rejecting the legislation, although a nice Murray Darling package and censorship of alcohol advertising may change their minds.
If so it would be a win for the opposition whose main policy seems to be oppose at all costs, unless it’s unpopular.
The ‘success’ of a similar scheme in WA has been the strongest argument produced by the Government. Most criticisms revolve around the Government’s lack of action and its need to ‘Watch’ everything from fuel to grocery prices.
Maybe they should be looking further a field for inspiration. In the US, website www.gasbuddy.com recently made TIME Magazine’s 50 Best Websites 2008.
GasBuddy.com as you might have guessed, is a fuel price listing website. Independent contributors post fuel prices from service stations in their area to the website in exchange for rewards points. With over 700,000 contributors it seems to be a popular source of information.
GasBuddy.com must have something going for it, it has already spawned two strong competitors www.gaspricewatch.com and www.gasprices.mapquest.com.
If interest from users is strong enough to support three dotcom companies, maybe there is something in this Fuel-Watch idea after all.
