Locals pick up medals in NSW Open Swimming Championships

The NSW Open Swimming championships were held last Friday through Sunday and, in many respects, this meet was a dress-rehearsal for the Olympic qualifying trials being held next month (commencing 22nd March). These championships featured the "who's who" of Australian swimming plus a handful of competitors from Japan, Britain and NZ.

A number of local swimmers from the Sutherland Leisure Centre (SLC) Aquadot club picked up medals or performed well. In Friday's 400m freestyle event, Grant Hackett won the event in his fastest time in three years. Coming in second was Wollongong’s Robert Hurley with a personal best time followed by SLC Aquadot’s Craig Stevens.

SLC’s 19 year old Stephen Parkes came third behind Western Australia’s Adam Lucas and Warringah’s Shane Cross in 400m individual medley. He also made the final of 200m butterfly. Team mate Calum Timms came 5th in the same event won by Queensland’s Nick D’Arcy.

21 year old Eadie Sherie took out bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke multi-disability event.

Aquadot’s teenage women’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay team picked up silver behind the North Shore New Zealand club. The local team consisted of 15 yr old Micaela Abbott, Brittany Houghton (13), Jordan White (14) and Liana Rayner (17)

Eighteen year old Erin Malone qualified for the final of 200m breaststroke won by her idol Leisel Jones. She also won the B – Final in women’s 100m breaststroke. Cricket Humour

Australia’s Merv Hughes & Pakistan’s Javed Miandad:

During 1991 Adelaide Test, Javed called Merv a fat bus conductor.

A few balls later Merv dismissed Javed. "Tickets please," Merv called out as he ran past the departing batsman.
