Discover one of the reasons the country needs really high speed broadband

For the people who still wonder what the much hyped new fibre networks will mean to them personally take a look at YOC’s latest website http://www.yoctv.com (and .com.au)

WARNING - If you still have dial-up the experience will not be particularly edifying, in fact I would go so far as to suggest you don’t bother, i.e. unless you have a lot of time on your hands to wait for downloads.

However if, like nearly 70 per cent of all business users in Australia, you have ‘Claytons’ broadband the experience will be mixed and sometimes disappointing, but you will see glimpses of what the future holds, viz exciting full screen video clips with almost instantaneous streaming and amazing interactive tools.

To use an aeronautical analogy our current broadband is a bit like a sturdy old Douglas DC3 of WWII fame – certainly well past the Orville Wright prototype stage but short on luxuries and very very slow in modern day terms.

Fibre to the Node delivers Boeing 747 performance – I’m sure I’m not the only one who simply can’t wait till the jumbo finally arrives!

Yoctv.com is a first for local internet!

Anyone who regularly uses the internet at work or home, doesn’t everyone, has usually heard of YouTube, MySpace and now Facebook.

They’re an extremely rapidly growing online group of what the geeks call social networks and they all incorporate to some degree videos as an integral part of their communities.

They are what’s known as ‘top down’ and often termed by researchers communities of interest - if tiddly winks is what turns you on then you can find others similarly afflicted  all around the globe.

Whether you will be able to locate a like minded soul near where you live is another matter - in fact you often can, but usually with some difficulty since this is not what they are designed to do, although the newest site Facebook does a reasonable job.

Community portals such as YourOnlineCommunity.com.au differ from these now well known global social networks insofar as they are geographically defined, i.e. they are specifically designed only to cater for people who live in a certain area, e.g. if you use the SmartPages directory in YOC it lists only local companies who actually reside or operate in the relevant community – Wollongong, Parramatta or The Shire.

YOC has been a leader in the development of private enterprise based (as opposed to non-profit) pure online communities in Australia since its inception in 2001 although there are a small number of similar operators in the USA and an increasing number of media organisations are trying to model their newspaper or TV based network of websites on this format.

To the best of our knowledge YOC is the first community portal in the world to develop VIDEO-on demand although some of the leading overseas hyper-local ‘news’ websites have embedded YouTube players to stream local content.
